Portraits of the Heart Historical Series
Book One~~~A Flickering Light (One of Library Journal's Best of 2009)
Book Two~~~An Absence So Great

The time period is the early 20th Century, 1910-1915.
Jessie Gaebele is a young woman living in the upper mid-west and she had been under the guidance and teaching of Fred Bauer an experienced photographer. When he became ill in book 1 A Flickering Light, Jessie kept his business going until he was well and could return. Book 2 begins with her living and working in another town away from Fred and his family, as well as her own parents and sisters. From the first page of the story the reader understands that there was more that just a working relationship between Jessie and Fred. Fred is an older man 26 years older that Jessie. Fred is married and has 3 children. During the course of the book Jessie works in other towns as a photographer, at each point hoping she can fulfill her dream to own her own photographic studio.

It is difficult to read a book 2 or 3 in a series without having read the previous books. I jumped in to the story of Jessie Gaebele without having read book 1~~A Flickering Light. It was about page 75 when I began to feel "apart" of the story. Before then I trudged a long hoping to understand better the main character and her circumstances.

The front cover of the book An Absence So Great is stunning! Colors of amber, brown, sepia, gold, surround a lone young women with her tripod and camera in a sea of wheat. This is a perfect foreshadowing of the main character Jessie. She is a young woman feeling alone with her emotions, dreams, and stirrings of independence, in a culture and time when women did not have equal rights.
At first glance the title of the book An Absence so Great--is to me an oxymoron--the 2 words absence and great are contradictory. Yet, the title speaks perfectly well of the theme and journey of the books characters.
I could easily relate to Jessie, at the beginning of the book she is 18 and wanting to be independent, self sufficient, and to pursue her dreams head-on. There is always a journey of experience and education that must be met in "growing up."
I loved it that Jessie and I share the same birthday, I too have always been fond that I share a birthday with Abraham Lincoln.
Jessie is a private person, avoiding conversations about her family, and anything that she finds to personal.
She has a sensitive eye, behind the camera lens she picks up on the emotions and the private stories of the people she takes pictures of.
There are several photographs in the book that are from the early 19th Century that helped set the mood for the book.
I loved having the cast of characters and map at the beginning of the book as opposed the usual back of the book.
At the back of the book after the story is the interview with the author--this is a must read!
Dispersed throughout the book words such as indiscretions and a memory of an episode are expressed from Jessie and Fred. I had no idea what had happened (I'd not read book 1) until later in the book.
The book takes another turn in the story with Mrs. Bauer (a complete book could be written about her.) Mrs. Bauer is a bitter, acrid, icy cold, indifferent, mean, dramatic, selfish woman---and I wondered if she had a mental illness.
I never felt that Mr. Fred Bauer was without innocence, nor can I say I trusted him, but I had a better understanding of the home life and history that they'd had.
I felt the author did a great job of writing about the culture of the early 20th Century, especially focusing on women that worked and had businesses.

God...Who Are You And What Can You Do For Me?

I am at least two weeks behind in answering the discussion questions for the week.

Session Six Questions:
Are you totally relying on God to provide for all your needs?
Is He sufficient enough for you or are you searching for more?

Do I rely on God for my every need? I fret and worry--sometimes--so the answer would be no. Because if I totally relied on God then I would "rest" in Him. At age 46 I am more "resting" in Him that I was at age 36 or even 26. What has happened in my life that has encouraged this growth has been much time in reading and studying the Scripture, prayer----and applying the Word in my life----this is called obedience.
Obedience is not a word that humans like, we think that children and dogs should be obedient, but when we become an adult we should have free choice to do what "we" think is best. As a Christian that kind of thinking just is not going to work----God is not going to allow that kind of thinking to work. If we are His child, then He is going to chisel that "self" away from what He wants us to become, His plan and will for our life.
So, in answer to this question He is at work and has continued to be at work in and through my life, praise God that He does not leave me as I was, but is actively at work in me!

Is God sufficient for me and am I looking for more?
No, He is all I need, as Peter said in John 6:68-69,
" Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." NIV

Session Seven Questions:
Are there areas in your life right now where you have placed someone else above the Most High God?
Do you need to move out of the way so that the Most High God can reign in your life?

Do I have an area of my life that I place above the Most High God? On occasion, sometimes more that just an occasion....me. I get in the way. Me, myself, and I is down right full of, myself. It is only God's grace that saves me, because I am a wretched sinful person and there is nothing good in me. Enough about me.

Do I need to move out of the way so that the Most High God can reign and work in my life? You bet!
"Trust in the Lord will all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
I get in the way by trying to figure it all out; many, many times a day I hear this verse from Proverbs 3:5 in my mind. Annette (listen up) "Trust in the Lord----don't try to figure it all out!" No, the voice is not condescending....it is spurring me onwards to a deeper faith. Praise His Holy Name that He does not leave me where I am, but Spurs me onward to the person that He created and is actively at work in me to be.

A Few Quotes

"Spiritual growth happens in crisis events when we are suddenly thrust to a higher or deeper level of intimacy."
Andrew T. Le Peau "As Different as we Think"

"Scripture is the bookshelf; tradition is the memory of what people in the house have read and understood (or perhaps misunderstood) from that shelf; and reason is the set of spectacles that people wear in order to make sense of what they read, while experience deals with the effects on people of what they read."
N. T. Wright "The Last Word"

"The vocation for you is the one in which your deep gladness and the world's deepest need meet."

This book was bought by me for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

Jerry Rankin and his wife Bobbye spent twenty-three years in the mission field in Asia, in 1993 Jerry became the president of the International Mission Board. With their experience Jerry writes the book Spiritual Warfare with much insight, knowledge, and wisdom. Jerry writes not only with their own experiences of being in the mission field, but also the testimonies of other missionaries.
In the book Spiritual Warfare the reader will see through Scripture and mission field experience; the efforts, temptations, and battles that Satan plagues on believer's. His battle against believer's is to steal God's glory!
I live in a nation that gives me freedom of worship, to have as many Bibles as I choose in my home, I can read my Bible in the public, I can preach on a city street. There are many countries in this world that to do any of the previous mentioned would result in my imprisonment and possible death. Earth is Satan's battlefield and he uses any means possible to try and defeat God's purposes and plan, because he knows his time is limited.
There are many who believe that demon possession is "hogwash". But, Satan is alive and at work on planet earth. Missionaries have an ominous task, they take the Good News message to every part of the world that they are legally allowed to, and to some places that are forbidden. Many have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel, they have all surrendered their will for His. A believer is not beyond being tempted and frustrated by Satan's attempts, but we have the "mind of Christ" and we have the "full armor of God." The Holy Spirit lives in us----and we are guided and directed by Him, and assured of the final Victory!
I agree with Beth Moore's assessment of this book (her review) is on the front cover of the book.
Beth states that this is "A Book that every Christian should read."
Jerry Rankin teaches that human pride, doubt, and fleshly desires stand in the way of God being glorified in our lives.
"Why is it so easy to get us to focus on our own comforts and needs, and nurture a sense of entitlement and turn us away from obedience? Because of our self-centered nature and what we want and feel we deserve."
This is the most important book I've read this year outside the Bible and I highly recommend all Christians reading this book!

Review-Songbird Under A German Moon

The link for the book:

Summerside Press Published 2010, 334 pages
Romantic Suspense Christian Fiction

This book was provided to me for free by Litfuse for the purpose of reading and reviewing.

The year is 1945 and twenty year old beautiful Betty Lake travels to post war Germany to sing for the occupied soldiers stationed there. She bunks with several other young girls in an old home that had former Nazi connections, and they sing and perform at Festspielhaus-Festival House. Betty meets Frank an Army Air Corps photographer, sparks between the two are evident as soon as they meet. There are strange sounds in the middle of the night at the home the girls live in. Even though the war is over Nazi sympathizers may not be finished. The book becomes suspenseful when Betty's roommate Kat disappears.
I am a daughter of a Word War II Veteran and any book on this time period I gravitate to.
I thought this was an enjoyable read, I have not read any books in the Christian market on post war Europe and for this it was a welcome read. The author interviewed over one hundred WWII Veterans for research on Songbird Under A German Moon. Some of the words that were used such as broad, lookie-lews, she's a peach, lousy cuss, swell, sappy--these were sayings during this time period. The speech that characters use in a book is important for the believability of the time period. The beauty of Betty Lake and her talent for singing could have made her uppity and conceited, instead she is motivated to want to bring comfort to the soldiers far from home. Betty is a likable character and so is Frank--they are both decent and faithful people.

Here Burns My Candle, Book One by Liz Curtis Higgs
WaterBrook Press 2010, 468 total pages
Historical Christian Fiction
The authors bonny website! www.lizcurtishiggs.com

This book was provided for free by WaterBrook Multnomah for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

Liz Curtis Higgs has graciously been keeping her readers updated in her newsletters and on Facebook, letting us know how the writing was going and when the book would be published. Liz has a gift for homespun warmth and communication to her readers, she does not hide behind the closed doors of her office, but is in the forefront of media communicating to her loyal readers.

The widow Lady Marjory Kerr lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with her son Donald and his wife Elisabeth and son Andrew and his wife Janet. They live in an extravagant home in Milne Square. The year is 1745 and Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart) is leading a Jacobite revolt. The Jacobite's were a political movement dedicated to the restoration of the Stuart Kings to the thrones of England, Scotland and Kingdom of Ireland. Edinburgh is in the heat of the revolt and many Highlander's are believer's in the Jacobite cause.
Elisabeth is a Highlander by birth, yet married a lowlander Donald---where will her loyalties lie?
Janet is a spoiled snobbish gal that enjoys parties and her social butterfly friends.
Lady Marjory counts and frets over her hidden gold, her focus is always on her families social status and in humoring her sons.
Donald is living two lives, one that he hides.
Andrew is a man without a firm foundation, he struggles with wanting to do something noble.
The entire family will be swept up in the history that Edinburgh endures during the campaign of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The book is based on the story of Naomi and Ruth.

At the beginning of each chapter is a well-known and beloved quote from a poem. Liz is a skillful storyteller, this story is carefully laid out drawing the reader in. Liz has an amazing attention for details and historical research, often traveling to Scotland for interviewing and researching her books. The heavy research and study pays off in this book by bringing to life for the reader the city of Edinburgh, the history of the time period, the clothing, the geography, dialect, food eaten, the duties of servants, and the Kirk.
Each of the characters are hiding something, some covering their secrets better that the others. With each of them Liz gives a distinct strength and a weakness, these strengths and weaknesses follow them until one or the other determines the final outcome. In life it is in the crisis times that real character is determined; in the book Here Burns My Candle I saw that in "most" of the characters a transformation no matter what their previous life had been, they felt a need to rise to the occasion.
I loved loved loved this book, it is now a favorite and I cannot wait until book two is available in the Spring of 2011---Mine Is The Night.

"Here burns my candle out; ay, here it dies." William Shakespeare

The Gospel Revolution

The Association of Biblical Counselors presents The Gospel Revolution
Conference to Feature Line-up of International Speakers

http://www.youtube.com/v/KawY9qUwqIc&hl=en_US&fs=1&

Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX—The Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC) has announced its annual conference to be held on May 20-22, 2010 at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth, TX.  The keynote speaker will be Tullian Tchividjian, addressing this year’s theme of The Gospel Revolution
Tchividjian is the pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, founded by the late Dr. D. James Kennedy, and is the grandson of renowned evangelist Dr. Billy Graham.  Tchividjian has authored several books, including Unfashionable and Do I Know God?, and speaks at conferences throughout the US.  His sermons are broadcast daily on the radio program Godward Living.
The conference is an experience designed for both the young and old of our culture and those who lead them.  The Gospel Revolution: Rediscovering the Power of the Cross will teach a new generation of Christians how to effectively apply the Gospel of the Cross to the real issues of everyday life.  Tchividjian explains, “I am absolutely convinced that most Christians believe that the gospel ignites the Christian in life, but they fail to believe the gospel is the fuel that keeps Christians going and growing every day.”

Although the conference is targeted to counselors, the event is open to anyone who would like to better apply Biblical principles to own their lives, as well to those who are seeking to become better equipped to offer counsel within their churches and ministries.
The Gospel Revolution conference will feature several authors and international speakers, including Dr. Paul David Tripp, Elyse Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Mike Emlet.  Speakers with local ties include Beau Hughes (Lead Pastor of The Village Church in Denton, TX), Elliott Greene (Redeemer Seminary), and Jeremy Lelek (President of ABC).
Based in Bedford, TX, the Association of Biblical Counselors exists to encourage, equip, and empower all believers everywhere to live and counsel the Word.  ABC offers resources designed to equip professional counselors, pastoral staff, and all Christians to provide wise counsel that comes straight from Scripture—and only from Scripture.  ABC believes that the Bible answers every single question that psychology tries to answer.

Review-Raven's Ladder

Raven's Ladder by Jeffrey Overstreet
Book 3 in The Auralia Thread--The Gold Strand
WaterBrook Press, 2010, 380 pages of story

Jeffrey Overstreet's website is Looking Closer

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9781400074679

This book was provided for free by WaterBrook Multnomah for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

The Auralia Thread
Book 1--Auralia's Colors published 2007
Book 2--Cyndere's Midnight published 2008
Book 3--Raven's Ladder published 2010

Cal-raven that was introduced in book one is the son of King Cal-Marcus, late in book 1 Cal-raven becomes King of Abascar. Cal-raven's mother Jaralaine had ran away from her family and disappeared when he was young. In book 1 of this series Abascar is destryoed and Cal-raven wants to create a New Abascar.
In this book Cal-raven is ambushed and taken prisoner, leaving his subjects in danger. Cyndere the daughter of the Bel Amica queen wants to help Cal-raven but he must accept her help.
Bel Amica is a coastal group of people that is wealthy and bewitching.
In book 1 we were introduced to Auralia and her colors, but now the Bel Amican's are distorting the message of her colors.

Although I liked this book, it was a hard read---hard in that I had to work to keep up with the pace of the story and the various parties or groups of people.
Cal-raven is the main character---although after just having read Auralia's Colors Book 1---I wished to read more about Auralia. Auralia is alluded to and dreamed about in this book, but not seen.
This book is full of white rats, strange insects, creatures with claws, winged creatures, black tarpaulin, viscor cats, and reptiles.
I am new to Fantasy Christian Fiction---this is my 4th book this year and in each case there are strange creatures such as in this book Raven's Ladder.
The characters names I thought were too cool, they are reminiscent of strong Gaelic sounding names.
I would have liked to have had less characters to keep up with, and a deeper more drawn out story in focusing on Cal-raven or Cyndere.
Although Cal-raven is the main character and a king, I found it interesting that his looks are not doted on--another words he is not a character created to be swash buckling or the most handsomest and virile of men. He is painted as a man that has a yearning and quest for his people, struggles over decisions, the stresses of providing for the safety of his people, and he is haunted by the memories of Auralia.
I like it that there was a list of characters in the back of the book (why in the back of the book, why not the first few pages such as a map that was given?)

Review-Lady Carliss and the Waters of Moorue

Lady Carliss and the Waters of Moorue
Book 4 in The Knights of Arrethtrae
by Chuck Black see his website Perfect-Praise.
Multnomah Books 2010, 162 pages of story, page 163 epilogue, several pages in the back of the book for discussion including answers.
This is Young Adult Fantasy Fiction----but suitable and enjoyable for any adult.
Additional material is a music piece written by Elizabeth Black, Journey To Moorue.

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9781601421272

The Knights of Arrethtrae
Book 1. Sir Kendrick and the Castle of Bel Lione
Book 2. Sir Bentley and Holbrook Court
Book 3. Sir Dalton and the Shadow Heart
Book 4. Lady Carliss and the Waters of Moorue

The opening lines of the book, "She seemed an ordinary enough girl on the outside-a quiet, plain, and simple girl-but within, Carliss was as unique and complex as the snowflakes that sometimes fell upon her father's farm when she was a child." This opening line set the stage in my mind for an anticipation of what this book would bring in the main character of Carliss, "an ordinary enough girl."
Carliss a young woman has both knowledge and wisdom, she is an expert of both sword and bow. She is a veteran of other battles. She embarkes on a mission, then must take a detour in order to help a friend named Salina.
On this mission Carliss discovers a devious plot.

The author uses old English words such as oft and happenstance, I felt this added to the atmosphere of the story.
There is good building words that crescendo a readers drawing into the story.
There is an excitement in this adventure and an enticement to continue reading.
The variety of other characters are a mix of heroic and villain, those that require patience and resilience, and
there are those that are naive and impressionable because they are young, and those that take advantage of the unsuspecting.
There are strong hints of Christianity in this book, the sharing of the message and accepting the truth about the King and the Prince. Carliss prays to whom she calls "My Prince."
This story was easy to follow, the author arranges--organizes the story so the reader can easily understand and keep pace.
I loved this book and am sad that I'd not read the previous 3 books in this series.
Chuck Black has an ability to write a Fantasy Fiction Novel and incorporate a Christian message that is an allegorical teaching story.

Review-Be Authentic

Be Authentic, Exhibiting Real Faith In The Real World
Old Testament Commentary Genesis 25-50
By Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe, Foreword by Ken Baugh
First Edition published in 1997, and reissued and revised under David C. Cook -- B&B Media Group in 2010
216 pages

http://www.davidccook.com/catalog/Detail.cfm?sn=106280&source=search

This book was provided for free by David C. Cook--B&B Media Group to me for the purpose of reading and reviewing.

The "Be" Series are 50 commentaries that all begin with the title "Be" then followed by a descriptive word.
Soon to be released are study guides that will be companions to each of the commentaries that he wrote.
Be Authentic follows the lives of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.

Weirsbe gives the definition of "authentic as original as opposed to a copy." Each of these men Isaac, Jacob and Joseph were men that had faults, made wrong choices, had weaknesses, yet each of them had "defining moments" that shaped them into the plan that God had for their lives and for His will.
At the end of each chapter is "Questions For Personal Reflection or Group Discussion."

I have grown to love Weirsbe's books. Last year I had the pleasure of reviewing the New Living Translation Study Bible that Wiersbe is the General Editor of. I continue to use this Bible as my read the Bible through choice of translation.
He writes in such a way that it is as if he is in the room sitting next to you, he does not talk over your head, nor at you as if he is lecturing you, but he speaks on a more personal level.
He is a writer of discernment and ability to give application to the reader. One of my favorite quotes is--
"Faith is living with out scheming, and faith means obeying God no matter how we feel, what we think, or what might happen."

Review-Auralia's Colors

Auralia's Colors by Jeffrey Overstreet
WaterBrook Press, Published 2007, 334 pages
Jeffrey Overstreet's website is: Looking Closer
To purchase the book or to read more information from the publisher:
http://waterbrookmultnomah.com/catalog.php?isbn=9781400072521

This book was purchased by me for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

I am a new sprout in reading Fantasy Christian Fiction. I started reading this genre this year. I feel as if I'm using a different part of my brain when I read Fantasy Christian Fiction---but I'm having a blast!

Auralia's Colors is Book One--The Red Strand in The Auralia Thread, Book Two is Cyndere's Midnight, and Book Three which I will be posting a review on this week is Raven's Ladder.
I would  have liked to have time to read Book Two Cyndere's Midnight, but the book tour for Raven's Ladder is this week and I did not have time.

Auralia is found as a young babe by two thieves. Auralia grows up not knowing her true identity, nor how she came to be left. She is a mysterious child and a child with a talent for creating colors that is not allowed in the kingdom. The people that have become her surrogate family are enchanted by her. She carries beauty and charm with her wherever she goes. The book gives the descriptions of the various kingdoms and diverse groups of people. The names that are used for the characters reminded me of old Welsh or Nordic names.
There is a large assortment of characters, those that are both vicious and kind, poor and seemingly insignificant folk, and those that are of royalty. We are introduced to Car-raven which will continue in books two and three---he is a main character that's persona develops. There are creatures that live in their land that are morphed - 3-D.
I loved this book and as I stated earlier I felt as if I was using a different part of my brain while I was reading this story. It is engrossing and enjoyable. The creativeness that Jeffrey Overstreet has I am astounded by.
It is not a book that you could speed read through, you would miss out on important information. I always take notes when I read and I was able to keep up with the characters and their names, the plot, the descriptions of where they lived and the other creatures that live there. Auralia reminds me of a Princess in a fairy tale, she is beautiful and exotic in her descriptions of her clothing and demeanor. It is a fast story and at times I had to work to keep pace. I appreciated that the author or publisher inserted a list of characters by Book Three Raven's Ladder. Each sentence is a mouth full of vivid verbs---they almost have a palatable taste.
Stay tuned for a review of Raven's Ladder this week!

The book maybe purchased at Morning Star Christian Books

This is the full cover of the book.

This book was given to me for free by the author for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

I have had this book for a few months, I chose not to read it cover to cover but instead to read it during my daily devotional time. Praising God seems to be something that falls by the wayside so to speak. For the small minority that have a daily devotional time, reading praise books or praising God from our own mouth seem to be something we will think about doing later. (I'm speaking of myself too.)
This book has been a blessing and I've enjoyed my praise time with the Lord each new day.
The book is arranged by subject titles such as:
The Bible tells us to.....Exalt, Magnify the Lord
I Praise God Because He Is....Lord
After each of the titles, 1-3 pages of Bible verses are given from both the Old Testament and New Testament to correspond with the title.
All of the verses are from the King James Version.
Pages 179-183 all of the Divine Names and Title are given in alphabetical order--with Scripture references.
Pages 229-240 is a section set aside for personal notes.

I loved this book and am grateful to Mike Thomas for sharing this book with me.
Thank you.

Review-A Lineage of Grace

A Lineage of Grace, Five stories of unlikely women who changed eternity
by Francine Rivers
Tyndale House, published 2009, 542 pages

This book was purchased by me for the purpose of reading/reviewing.

Lineage of Grace is actually five books that have been compiled into one book. The five books are the stories of five women from the lineage of Jesus.
The women and the title of each chapter are as follows:
Unveiled--Tamar
Unashamed--Rahab
Unshaken--Ruth
Unspoken--Bathsheba
Unafraid--Mary

Each of the stories were created perfectly in my mind by the descriptive writing of Francine. Their stories were not told with a slant to rectify them such as in the stories of Rahab and Bathsheba, nor were they written in such a way as to exalt them such as in the story of Mary the mother of Jesus. In their stories we see their humanity, their weaknesses, fears and anxieties, insecurities, patience, kindness, and their great faith and love.
I was most moved by the stories of Ruth and Bathsheba. Re-reading the story in the Bible of Ruth now gives me a new insight in to her deep character, above all her sacrificial love that she had for Naomi. In the story of Bathsheba I was given deeper insight into both her weaknesses and tarnished image, yet she was the mother of Solomon, and in the lineage of Jesus.
I loved this book, it was a pleasure and an enjoyment to read!

New Doggie

I adopted a new doggie this afternoon from the Animal Shelter. He is a 4 year old Schnauzer that I've named Fritz. My dad helped me pick him out and that made it all the more special!

He looks a little scruffy now, needs to see the groomer, but the Veterinarian said to wait a week. I did have him checked for heart worms--negative, he has all his shots, he is neutered. I shopped at Petsmart twice today buying all the necessities!

My Thoughts on So Long, Insecurity

Doylene from Christian Woman Keeper of The Home and I are both posting our thoughts on Beth Moore's newest book So Long, Insecurity. To read what Doylene has written:
http://christianwomankeeperofthehome.blogspot.com/2010/03/when-i-need-jesus-most.html
Doylene is focusing on the negative and I the postive. Let's hope this endeavor is satisfactory.

You can read more about this book at the following two links:

and
The LPM Blog

I have searched and the best price for this book is on-line at Christian Book for $14.99

If you are a member of Barnes and Nobles the price is $14.61
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/So-Long-Insecurity/Beth-Moore/e/9781414334721/

I don't believe that Doylene has read far enough into the book to realize that Beth does not state that our insecurity comes from men alone, nor from the way that we view our outward appearance. Beth Moore does speak on these reasons, yet there is much more to insecurity than an insecurity about the outward appearance or men.
Beth addresses several issues that can cause insecurity in chapters 5 and 6. Some examples that can cause insecurity is a significant loss, instability in the home, rejection, our own dispositions, and in chapter 6 media exploitation.
When I think of the insecurities that can be sustained from a significant loss I am reminded of my maternal grandmother. Grace Emily was born in central Texas in 1906. At her birth she had an older sister named Bertha, two older brothers, and later two more sisters would follow. Seven days after the birth of the youngest sister, their mother died, probably from an infection during the delivery of her Christmas Day baby. The new baby was sent to live with her maternal grandparents, the rest of the children were left to be raised by the father and the oldest sister Bertha. Bertha cared for the family as best she knew how, until she married and then died at the young age of 18. When Bertha married Grace took over as the "mother" in the home until she too married at age 18. When my grandmother was a young girl she was molested by one of her older brothers. My grandmother spoke well of her father, I'm sure he was at a loss as to how to care for a home full of children, as well as all of the chores that were needed to be done in the home. He was a farmer and was absent often--working in the field, they were sharecropper's.
The deaths of my grandmother's mother and sister, the trauma of molestation, the struggles of caring for a home and children when she was just a girl, left my grandmother with several insecurities.
My grandmother was insecure and fearful of being left alone, and or abandoned. She had an insecurity and fear of men, and the shame of incest. She was insecure and afraid of sex, being pregnant, and delivering a child. She had an insecurity of strangers. She had an insecurity of sicknesses and diseases, she was mistrustful and insecure of doctors.
As a woman my grandmother read her black leather King James Bible everyday, she walked to Sunday school and Church every Sunday no matter where they lived, she taught Sunday school to children, she raised my mother and uncle to attend Church faithfully and to tithe. She was an excellent cook, baker, housekeeper, gardener, mother. Yet, she had insecurities that she took to her grave.
What is my point in sharing with you the story of my grandmother? A person can attend Church every Sunday morning, read the Bible everyday, be a believer in Jesus Christ; yet they can have problems, fears, insecurities and even depression. Just as a person can have a disease or sickness in the physical body, a person can have something that they are carrying around with them in their mind and heart. It maybe unseen to us, but it is wrecking havoc inside that person.
Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are given a task from the Holy Spirit. They are "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." Ephesians 4: 11-12. The word built in Greek means edification, strengthening, developing another persons' life, through acts and words of love and encouragement. Beth Moore in her newest book
So Long, Insecurity is building people up, she is in hopes of strengthening and developing another persons' life.
Beth Moore did not decide one morning she would write a book on insecurity and then use only her life as an example. She felt strongly led by the Holy Spirit to write this book. She interviewed 950 women and 150 men.
In an article from the Home Life magazine February issue pages 20-24. She explains her research,
"There wasn't a single profession or level of education or mark of success that shielded a woman from insecurity."
Sample of this Home Life magazine:
http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/files/lwcF_crd_mgz_HomeLife_FullSample.pdf
Maybe Doylene does not have any insecurities buy I sure do, and so does my 87 year old dad. Just take away his soap and toilet paper and he will have an absolute conniption fit (tantrum). He lived through the depression and you just can't take away his memories of that period in his life, at least not on this side of heaven.
What are my insecurities: rejection, dramatic changes, personal dispositions (I am extremely sensitive).
Beth Moore talks about these in chapter 5 of her book.
It was noted on page 86 that her daughter made a striking comment to Beth in a doctors office while waiting for a mammogram, "He knows it's scary to be us." God knows it is scary to be us! I cried when I read that statement, because in the fall of October of 2005 that was me in that office waiting to have a biopsy that would later turn out to be breast cancer. I was afraid, but God had everything under control, he was not at all taken off guard. Yet, "He knows it is scary to be us." In Isaiah 53: 3 it states that he "was a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering." That is something that I can feel comforted and uplifted by, that He knows me and that He knows it is scary to be me.
I praise you Lord, that you are my Immanuel (God with us).

My Thoughts on So Long, Insecurity

Doylene from Bible Study and I will both be reading and posting reviews on Beth Moore's new book------ So Long, Insecurity.
Doylene is wanting to take the role as negative and I positive. I believe that is the plan?
I want to say right up front that my opinions are just that, mine. I will also not be taking part in any kind of flinging or flogging of words, I am aware that there are some people that just love to debate and or argue.
Not I. Why not? Because that is not what I feel God has called me to do. Remember it is all about Him, not me, not us.

Recently I went to a planning meeting for a simulcast that will be on this book scheduled for April 24. Over 600 sites in North America are taking place in this event, Beth will speak live and then telecast to over 600 places where people will be meeting to hear her speak on Insecurity.  I along with another gal friend from our church (we are both on the Women Ministry Team) went to this planning meeting. At the planning meeting we heard a live telecast from Beth in speaking about this event. I took a few notes (I'm a note taker). The statement that she made that stood out to me was:
"Every challenge or experience is towards our equipping. The word equipping is from two dominate verbs meaning preparing and repairing. Jesus equally equips me, He is preparing me for a season ahead. Part of our usefulness is in His process of repairing in my life."
I have noticed, that one experience in my life prepares me for the next experience in my life. It is like stepping stones, although most of those stones have been boulders. God in His will allows these trials to happen in my life, that when that trial or season is complete (I may or may not have a brief respite) then that previous season prepares me for the next season.
For example:
Our oldest son David joined the Army in mid January 2002. We said our goodbyes and gave silent tearful hugs to him at the recruiting station on January 16, 2002. He was gone only about a month when he had to return home, he was ill with strep throat and mono. He was home thirty days to recuperate, then back he went recycled through basic training and then further training. We were able to visit with him at Fort Knox, Kentucky for family weekend and then again when he graduated. This makes for a total of three times we said good bye to him, the fourth time we saw him at graduation we brought him home for leave and he was stationed most of the time near home. Each of those times of good-bye prepared us for the bigger good-bye that would happen when he was deployed to Iraq in early 2003 and again in late 2005.
There are many insecurities when you send your child off to war. The biggest is what if he does not come back home to us? That question mark just hangs there above your head if you let it. I've heard it said that faith is doing it scared. True. Faith is doing it not knowing the outcome. Faith is leaving it in God's will.
On March 9th David will be honorably discharged from the National Guard, after over eight years in the military.
All of the praise and all of the honor and all of the glory belongs to Jesus alone!

I will be posting more on Insecurity in the coming day's!

God...Who are You and what can You do for me?

God...Who are You and what can You do for me? is a ten week Bible study that is online over @
At the Well...In Pursuit of Titus 2. Every Monday Jenifer Jernigan posts a teaching video, down loadable study material, and a discussion question for the week.
The question for this week is Who is master of your life? Who are you allowing to rule over you? Your job? baggage from past? Unforgiveness? Hatred? Anger? Unhappiness? Your Children?

At certain times in my life I have allowed all of the above to master my life, and have often done so without even being aware of it. As a wife and mother, and caregiver to my parents,  I have encountered my own set of trials. It is easy to allow those moments to overtake my thoughts and dictate to me an attitude and response.
The emotion of those moments must be mastered by His Spirit that abides or lives in me. I cannot be enslaved by my own weak thoughts and emotions, I must allow and be obedient to His Spirit that abides in me to govern my thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
The word remain is used in John chapter 15 in the NIV, in Greek it is meno-- meaning to stay, remain, live, dwell, abide, to be in a state that begins and continues, yet may or may not end or stop. To abide in Christ is to follow His example of a life obedient to the will of God.
Is this an easy thing? Of course not. It is a daily and sometimes moment by moment surrendering of obedience to Jesus. When I feed and abide in His word, His words are flowing into my heart and mind, and they are being planted there, and they take root, and then fruit will be produced.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22 NIV
I can tell a difference in myself when I miss a day of reading His word, His word gives me sustenance and it strengthens me. We cannot fall prey to the thinking that we can get by without reading God's word, who are we kidding? We are kidding only ourselves. We must remain or abide (read and obey) in Him.
"I am the vine; you are the branches, If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned." John 15:5-6

Who is master of my life, Jesus is. But I must remain or abide in Him, because apart from Him I can do nothing.

One Question Friday

One Question Friday is a weekly post generated by Wendy @ All in a Day's Thought.

                                                                       "Pick a planet?"

The word earth is used an astounding 738 times in the Bible.

The following are a few examples from the NIV:

"The earth is the LORD'S and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters." Psalm 24: 1-2

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers, or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him." Colossians 1: 15-16

"Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2: 9-11

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1: 8

"But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." John 12: 32

My answer as you have probably guessed, is earth. Earth is where Jesus' redeeming work on the cross was made, and it is where our work of being His witness and in spreading the Gospel is to take place. In May of 2009 the International Mission Board's count stated there were over 6.9 billion people on earth
(specifically--6,929.249,983). There are 6,454 people groups that are as yet unreached, for a total of
3, 990,659,766 people.
http://www.imb.org/GlobalResearch/downloads/archives/2009-05%20GSEC%20Overview.pdf

There is MUCH work to do, what can you do to be His witness--His example to those people you are in contact with everyday? God may not call you to a foreign mission field such as Africa, but there are people that you encounter everyday that need to know the Gospel's message.
