The third book in this series---Lancaster County Secrets---will be available December 1, 2010.
The title is, The Search.

This book was provided to me for free by LitFuse and Revell--Baker Publishing, for reading/reviewing.

The year is 1965. The Waitings main character is Jorie King. Jorie is 24 when the book begins. She is an Amish woman living with her grandparents in Beacon Hollow, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In addition to helping her grandparents, she cares for their prize collection of horses. Soon Jorie will begin teaching Amish children in a 1 room school house. Jorie is close to the Zook family. She is often seeking their advice, or willing to help them with their farm and home. Jorie has been waiting on Ben Zook for a long time. Ben is one of four brothers in the Zook family. Ben is in Vietnam, he left Lancaster County and the Amish community telling Jorie he "wanted to see the world". Ben did not seem to "see" the love and tenderness Jorie has for him, nor did he seem to have a problem with Jorie's future life being up in the air. While Ben is gone the friendship that Jorie has with the oldest brother Cal blossoms. But what can become of this budding relationship?

What stands out the most to me in this book is the complete commitment and dedication and love that the Zook family and Jorie exhibits.
I've read time and time again that the Amish exemplify the simple life. I'm not sure that they "live" a simple life; because they have sickness, financial problems, accidents, and family strife as all people in the world have. The simple life could only mean it is simple in how they respond. Their response is simply to trust and have faith in God. That some how and in some way God is going to work it all out. There may be times when waiting for God to work it all out takes a long time. At least a long time to us. We are still to remain patient.
Even though a few things in this story was predictable, I really liked it. I felt encouraged and uplifted after reading it.

Christian Non-Fiction/Memoir/Forgiveness/Hope/Suspense

This book was purchased by me for reading/reviewing.

"Forgiveness is the language of heaven."

Is there a limit to what you cannot forgive? Is forgiveness based on our own will power or emotion? How many times will you forgive someone that continues to inflict pain to you or your loved ones?
Will there ever be a feeling of peace after forgiving someone?

Rebecca Nichols Alonzo answers these questions in her true life story, The Devil in Pew Number Seven.

The book begins with the horror that unfolded on March 23, 1978. We are given a brief prelude of this day, and then later in the book more information will be given about that ominous day. Then the author Rebecca (who is the voice in the book) backs up in the story, by telling the readers of how her parents met (Robert and Ramona Nichols), and about their past lives before marrying. The emphasis is always on the love, courage, dedication, faith, and commitment to the Lord that her parents had. Soon after her parents marriage they travel as evangelists. Later moving to Sellerstown, North Carolina to begin their ministry in a church. Robert Nichols is the pastor of a small congregation. Rebecca and then later her brother Daniel is born. When Rebecca was a small child even before Daniel was born the threats began. Harassing phone calls, letters, death threats, all of which terrorize the family. This terror continues for years. Rebecca's parents are strong in their faith and their resilience is in Christ Jesus alone. An intensity of the violation on the family escalates. A dark fearful storm is getting closer, the reader knows it, can feel it.

This was a difficult book to read. Just from reading the back cover of the book I was already aware that the conclusion of the book would not be positive.
The book is written eloquently, honestly, and with what must have taken great courage to write.
My heart raced at times, and tears definitely flowed at times.
I believe that this is the most profound modern testimony on forgiveness.
It is a story that I will not forget, and it is not meant to forget. Rebecca's story is meant to plant a seed in our minds and in our hearts, in order for us to search over our lives to see if their is someone we need to forgive.
We are taught through her story what forgiveness is, how it feels afterwards, and how our forgiveness affects those watching.
This is not a book that I feel comfortable with in stating "what an awesome book". Instead I will state that it is a powerful book that every Christian should read. Why? Because at some point in our walk with Jesus it is assured we will need to forgive someone, and as a Christian---a follower of Christ Jesus---we are commanded to forgive.

"Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?' Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times."
Matthew 18:21-22 NIV
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Matthew 6: 37-38. NIV

The author gave a reference to another book, one that I read years ago and I also recommend.

I could not find an official website for the author Simon Ponsonby. He is the Pastor of Theology at St. Aldates Church in Oxford, England. The link to this church and his sermons:

This book was provided for free to me by David C. Cook a B and B Media Group for reading/reviewing.

1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV
"Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.' " see Leviticus 11:44-45, Romans 6:22, 1 Corinthians 1:2.

I had an interesting experience over the weekend. My husband and I went to a party given by old friends that we've known for over 25 years. We rarely see these people, they live in another town. When we arrived the party was in full frontal swing. Then my husband and I remembered why we don't see these friends much, we live polar different lives. I won't give the details of the happenings at the party, no need to. My point in giving this illustration is that while I was at the party, literally standing on the sidelines so to speak, a woman walked up to me and said, "you don't look like you belong here."
Not only was this woman correct, but I was reminded of the current book that I had just read and am now reviewing, The Pursuit of the Holy.
When the word holy is used even Christians can be uncomfortable with the word. I believe the main reason is because it feels so unattainable. I believe also that their maybe some who do not want to fully give themselves over to be possessed by God. The thought of living a holy life would require them to give up certain things they don't want to give up. I'm sorry if I just stepped on some toes, but once upon a time I felt the same way. I just did not want to give up those "things" that I thought were so vastly important.
In my walk with Jesus I have learned a few things, one of them is that the closer my walk is with Him---in daily reading and studying His Word, prayer, worship, abiding in Him; the more I realize His holiness, and my absolute sinful filth and thus in need of His grace. The pursuit of holiness in me is only attainable because of Jesus, it will be perfected when I see Him fully as He is, which will be when I am with Him in heaven.

The author has written a splendid book!
Simon Ponsonby begins with, "we are about to take a journey." A journey into what holiness is, how it is lived out in our lives in order that we will not be a Christian in name only; but that people will see the reflection of Jesus in our lives. Why should the world take us seriously that we are a Christian if we are not reflecting Jesus in our lives?

"Holiness is the core of God's being." Simon Ponsonby
"Holiness is purity, moral perfection, the absence of sin." R. A. Torrey
"Holiness is the way God is. To be holy He does not conform to a standard. He is that standard. He is absolutely holy with an infinite incomprehensible fullness of purity." A. W. Tozer

Ponsonby gives many Scripture references, my favorite by far is Isaiah chapter 6. On the day that I read that chapter in his book was the very week my BSF class was studying Isaiah chapter 6---that was not a fluke---it was the Holy Spirit at work.
Ponsonby speaks on perfectionism and legalism, the sinfulness in us, justification, sanctification, and God's grace.

"Grace smothers sin."

I felt the author wrote an affective and applicable book on the holiness of God, but also on our own reflection of it in our own lives. The book is definitely a thinking book, it is a book to read and then ponder and pray about.
I am still pondering in my own life, do I mirror Christ Jesus? I hope so. In the story that I told earlier about the woman that stated "I did not look like I belonged there." I think that is the most beautiful compliment I have received in my life. I hope that what she saw in me that led her to make that statement, was Jesus' reflection in me.

Christian Fiction/Gilded Age/New York/Society and Social Customs/Débutante

This book was provided to me for free from Bethany House because I am a member of their An Open Book (I am in charge of my churches Book Club group).

Miss Clara Carter the only child of physician Dr. Willard Carter live on 5th Avenue in New York City. The year is 1891. Recently Dr. Carter's sister, a widow, Mrs. Lewis Stuart has come to live with them. Shortly after arriving Clara's aunt begins to assertively make life altering changes on behalf of Clara's "mission".

Débutante--usually a wealthy young woman making her social debut.

At 17 Miss Clara Carter is a débutante and along with her best friend Lizzie, they are each competing for the same man from a distinguished and wealthy family in New York City. In the beginning it is a game, laughable at times, trying at other times. Yet, during this débutante season, Clara matures not only in her physical body but in her mind and her emotions. She wants to exert her opinions; but is stifled and imprisoned by the society cultures of the gilded age. Women are not independent of men, it is rare for a woman to be able to make her own choices, including whom she will marry.

I thought this was an enjoyable read! There were times when because of my own independent 21st Century mentality, I was exasperated by Clara's "doormat" existence. After reading this novel I now understand better  what women went through in not having a voice. They were told what to do and when to do it and how to do it. Restrictions and dominance from men and society were the norm, they did not know any differently.
Clara is a sweet and likable character, and I feel was exact for representation of a 17 year old young woman.
I was appalled at Clara's father and aunt. I felt they were lacking in empathy and love for Clara. They often remarked that this was all for her! Yet it was honestly about them!
Lizzie, Clara's best friend is not a large character in the book, her character could have been given more depth, but then that would have made for a longer book.
One of my favorite movies is Gosford Park---a murder mystery; but also a great story of the behind the scenes life of the wealthy, from the views of the servants that do all of the work so that the wealthy can literally play. I mention that because I would love to have known what was going on in the minds and secret conversations in the household servants of the Carter's.
Clara's days are filled with adhering to the social etiquette standards of the Gilded Age. She goes out to the opera, restaurants, teas, parties, balls. Every move that she makes is planned and executed with the one goal of becoming engaged at the end of the season.

Published by Tyndale House, 2010, 400 pages
Christian Fiction/Southern Story/Music/Suspense

This is the 3rd book I've read from Chris Fabry. His previous novels are Dogwood and June Bug both published by Tyndale House.
To read my reviews of these books:
http://awell-wateredgarden.blogspot.com/2009/10/review-dogwood.html
and
http://awell-wateredgarden.blogspot.com/2009/10/review-june-bug.html

I finished reading Almost Heaven last night about midnight. After I finished reading the book I laid the book in my lap and then I took a deep breathe.
There are some books that you read in order to escape into a light-hearted world.
There are some books that you read in order to educate your mind.
There are some books that you read in order to understand other people and cultures.
Then, there are some books that take you on a journey, and afterwards you know you will never be the same again.

Billy Allman of Dogwood, West Virginia is a middle aged man, an average looking guy, a bit non-social; but he has a loving and sincere heart. His reputation in his hollow of Dogwood is of deep honor and respect. There is music in Billy's soul, and the mandolin is the instrument that is the tool that reaches the hearts of others. Billy has another talent, electronics-specifically radio's.
Malachi is Billy's remarkable angel. Billy's life may have seemed an "a minor" to most people; but Billy is significant, valuable to God.

To say that I love this book would be an underestimate of my feelings, and I feel ill prepared in knowing how to express the depth of how this book has affected me. There are some life experiences that Billy went through that I fully understand, I've been there. I understand the crushing pain that he felt, it is a pain that you have to remind yourself to take a breathe. I understand about holding on to moments that are so precious, but you can't, and you know that this is it, there will be no more.

I love stories from the south. I understand their language, their colloquialisms, their culture. These are my people, my home-land.

Billy is not a Romeo heart throb type character; I wish there were more characters in books such as Billy. Billy is exactly who he is, average looking---which is most of us. Yet, he is a rare individual that surrenders his life to what he feels called to do. Most humans live life on their terms (at least they try). Happiness and success is number 1. But, what is really the definition of success? Is it your bank account balance? Or what your scale says that you weigh? Or maybe how large your house is? Then again, maybe success is not any of those things at all. Billy teaches us in his story what the definition of success is, and it is a story that will echo around in the walls of your heart clanging and banging, till it settles and you finally understand.
Malachi I found fascinating in his observation of humans. His role is to observe and protect Billy; yet he observes other people in Billy's life. I did not find anything in this fictional account of an angel that goes against Scripture. There is much that we do not know about angels. We do know that they are messengers and obey God fully. Malachi states that he is a "warrior not a scribe" and that he "gladly fulfills his role."
When the book writes from Malachi's thoughts and role the print is in bold lettering. The reader is introduced early in the story to Malachi.
Almost Heaven follows the life of Billy Allman from childhood to middle age. We hear his voice and Malachi's voice.
Almost Heaven is a brave book in that it tackles issues that are too absent from Christian literature. Some would call it edgy, I call it unfeigned-honest-stark life. Almost Heaven is fictional; yet there are elements of non-fiction work, mainly in that it is a teaching story, a cathartic story, and I feel could be of help for others.
Be prepared for stories with-in stories, for moments of pause and reflect, for tears.

Two of my favorite quotes:
"I believe every life has hidden songs that hang by twin threads of music and memory. I believe in the songs that have never been played for another soul. I believe they run between the rocks and along the creek beds of our lives. These are songs that cannot be heard by anything but the soul. They sometimes run dry or spill over the banks until we find ourselves wading through them."

"Sometimes love looks a lot different than we think it should."

I predict and I've never done this before; but I believe that this book will win book awards for 2010.

Are  you looking for a new devotional to read for 2011? Maybe a Christmas present for someone?

The One Year Book of Encouragement is a daily devotional that uses the NLT--New Living Translation, which is known for its easy ability to read and understand. Many quotes and writings from well known authors have been adapted for devotional reading. Some examples of writers are: Philip Yancey, Billy Graham, George MacDonald, Oswald Chambers, Calvin Miller, Lewis Smedes, and C. S. Lewis. Each page is a daily reading and most pages cover 2/3 to 3/4 in length. The book is paperback and the binding allows for the book to stay open easily, holding the book would be unnecessary since it will stay open by itself (except when your reading is at the end of the book).
I have enjoyed reading the devotional (I have briefly read through the entire book) but I'm currently reading it as a daily devotional. There has not been a daily reading that has not spoken to my heart and been just what I needed to hear for that day!

I stayed up until about 1 am in order to finish this suspenseful novel! Reading most of the book in 1 evening!

Lexi Solomon is a single mom to 9 year old Molly. Lexi struggles to make ends meet, working 2 jobs. Lexi's roommate is Gina and she helps out by watching Molly in the evenings while Lexi works. Grant her estranged husband and the father of Molly disappeared over 7 years ago. Grant is back in town after all these years and he wants to have a relationship with Molly. Shortly before Grant emerges an ominous acquaintance from the past is pushing Lexi to pay him back old debts owed.

This is an awesome book! I found it to not be predictable with several surprises.
Lexi is a character that I felt for, yet was angered by. She buried past mistakes; but they re-emerged endangering both her and her daughter. Lexi is a character that the reader can both love and hate at the same time, that is a great feat in a novel. In my opinion the main character does not have to be a person of noble character in order for me to love a book; but they must have and intriguing storyline--Lexi is a character that is captivating because of her unsavory past, and her single hearted devotion to her daughter.
The book touches on issues that are not always spoken about in Christian books and for this I have high regards.
On the front cover of the book another reviewer, Ted Dekker--stated that this book was "heart pounding suspense". I heartily agree, at one point I felt the adrenaline kick in and my brain was swimming with fear!
This is the first book I've read from the author Erin Healy and I'm looking forward to reading more from her!

Non-fiction/Encouragement/Growth

This book was provided to me for free by David C. Cook for reading/reviewing.

Stronger, Trading Brokenness for Unbreakable Strength tackles the difficult topic of why do we have trials and hard ships, and what is our reaction to them. In Stronger Jim Daly does not try and give a cut and dry answer to why do bad things happen, because there isn't a cut and dry answer. That is not a cop out, it is the reality of life on earth. Even in my own life I have learned that. What we do know, what we are assured of, is that God is with us, and that He "uses struggles to strengthen our faith." I am who I am today because of the hardships that I have been through, some people call hardships the refiners fire. I have also noticed that the struggle that I persevered through before, prepares me for the next struggle. Little bit by little bit God uses those struggles to cause growth in me (albeit painful) that then prepares me for the next more painful struggle. My term for these hard times is "growing pains". Jim Daly explains that, "at some level that sacrifice is necessary to follow Christ, that the Lord responds to us when we suffer for Him. It draws us nearer to Him, and when we do so, He gives us the strength to go through even the worst of trials." When everything is going well in life I tend to not pray as much, oh yes I pray off and on all day; but during those hard times I'm on my knees in prayer "with groans that words cannot express."
I loved this book! Jim Daly's writing style is as if he is sitting next to you and explaining things on an intimate private level just between you and him. He shares many examples from his own life, and others. Each of these stories are of personal struggles, depression, sickness, accidents, family problems, habits, murder. Yet, they also express God's grace amongst the turmoil that is going on all around them. The book to me is a book of encouragement for all of us.

Current Reading

Yesterday I bought the book Almost Heaven by Chris Fabry, Tyndale Fiction and started reading it last night.
Whow! What a jewel of a book! I'm hoping to have the review posted next week.

Youtube video for book:

I'm also reading Stronger, Trading Brokenness for Unbreakable Strength by Jim Daly, David C. Cook.
This non-fiction book is getting a lot of commercial press; but I agree it is a must read book. I hope to review this book next week as well!

What does the average American know about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? What information we know is gleaned from the media. I did not know that there were peace organizations in the Middle East. We don't hear about them do we? I am so glad that I watched this documentary film, not just for my own knowledge, but because I now have hope.
Three men of similar age are documented. Each of these men are from different religions, different lifestyles; yet each are working towards the same goal, peace. They are Sami Awad a Palestinian Christian, Yonatan Shapira an Israeli Jew, and Ahmad Al' Azzah a Palestinian Muslim.
Little Town of Bethlehem shows us the Bethlehem not seen by tourists. We see the graffiti on the derelict and crumbling walls, burned up cars, the tight living quarters for its inhabitants. We see clashes of violence and death on the streets, Israeli military, Muslim militants.
The movie draws you in to it by personalizing it for the audience in the three men and their families. We hear the stories of their lives and their parents and grandparents.
We see the street view of people: shopping, working, little children playing in the streets and near armed military, people drinking tea together.
The film was made with the focal audience being youth. I feel this film would be of interest to any adult. There are scenes I feel that are to violent and graphic for small children.
I do not feel that the film delves deeply in to any political agenda. The focus is on these men that have devoted their lives courageously to non-violence and peace.
