When asked to write a Christmas message, one of my first thoughts was Do I climb up on my soapbox regarding changing the words in Christmas songs, using only holiday, etc. I thought about it and decided no. After all, they’re only words and what difference does a word make---really make after all?
Then I kept on thinking. If they’re only words… But we as writers know the power of words, as do readers. When the wrong word is used, it ja…

"Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her first born son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said t…

An Unforgettable Gift by Karen O'Connor
On Christmas morning, 1912, in Paducah, Kentucky, fourteen-year-old Charlie Flowers and his three brothers and two sisters huddled in their beds, fully dressed, trying to keep warm as the wind howled outside their small frame house. It was a desperate time for the family. Earlier that year the children's father had died. And their mother had not found work. The coal had run out and there was little m…

All I Want for Christmas… Is to be able to have Christmas this Year by Melissa Mashburn
This is a simple request, isn’t it? In the previous years, we had great big bountiful Christmases with our family. Gifts, goodies and general Christmas cheer but this year it was different. The year before has been chock full of disappointments, failing businesses and severe cutbacks for our family.
Sitting with my husband one night we hammer…

~~~ What’s the best thing about Christmas? by Maureen Lang
The answer to that question will undoubtedly be different depending on the age and the faith of the person being asked. Most children will say it’s all about the gifts. Adults, even if they secretly still enjoy the gifts, will probably strive to sound more mature and say the holiday is all about friends and family. Still others might say it’s about tradition, or memories or the…
~~~ Good News! by Deb Kalmbach
The first Christmas card of the season arrived in my mailbox way back in August. How could anyone be that organized? Then I noticed my friend, Nita, had sent me a card I had written to her more than 20 years ago! Memories rushed back as I read the words penned in my familiar handwriting. It was Christmas, 1991, and my world had unraveled. I could almost pretend everything was all right at this most wonderful time of the year—but not …

The Rest of the Year

I have several posts scheduled for this week.
I am planning on not posting any new book reviews until after the new year. I want to spend time with my family, bake cookies, read the Christmas story out of my Bible, watch Christmas movies, take my granddaughter to the movies, love on my husband (he will be home all of next week).

I have 3 blogs besides this current one.
http://impressionsinink.blogspot.com
http://missdaisyanne.blogspot.com
I just added up the total number of books read in 2010:
148 1/2 ---this is not counting the books of the Bible that I've read, it does include a few children's books.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

My List of Christian Non-Fiction for 2010

This year I have read 28 Christian non-fiction books.
As I have stated before in previous posts that Costly Grace by Jon Walker stands out to me as #1 on my list.
Why? Because it was the most convicting book to me and ministered to me more than any other.

Link for my review:
http://awell-wateredgarden.blogspot.com/2010/11/book-review-costly-grace-contemporary.html

I strongly feel that each of these 28 books were sent to me not by accident, but because they were what I needed to read at that time. In each case I learned something not just insightful, but heart stirring, and provoking spiritual growth.
I am so thankful to be apart of the blogging community.
I am so thankful that God gave me an inborn desire: to read, to write, to express myself through book reviews, to educate myself, and to want to reach out to other's.
I am so thankful for the opportunities that have come as a result of blogging about books. The people that I've met whether they are other blogger's, reader&…

My List of Christian Fiction for 2010

I read 33 Christian fiction novels this year. All of them in some way ministered to me....I'm not just saying that to be polite...I mean it.
Instead of giving a top 10, I'll give my top 4 and why.

#1 Almost Heaven by Chris Fabry.
Link for my review:
http://awell-wateredgarden.blogspot.com/2010/10/book-review-almost-heaven-by-chris.html
This book is about a simple, humble man, willing to sacrifice no matter the cost.
I also liked it that this story was about a man, and not a woman----because most of the Christian fiction books that I've read are about a woman as the main character.

#2 No Greater Love by Kathi Macias.
Link for my review:
http://awell-wateredgarden.blogspot.com/2010/06/no-greater-love-by-kathi-macias.html
Once again this book as does the book above, displays love in action no matter the cost.
I also loved this book because it touched on bi-racial issues and prejudice. It gave me great insight that I needed, in what it is like to live in a country where freedo…

Non-fiction/Christmas

I loved this book! It was just what the Holy Spirit wanted me to read. I needed to be reminded of the Real Spirit of Christmas.

Dan Schaeffer begins this book by bringing the reader back to the definition of "what is the real spirit of Christmas that we hear so much about? How do we find it?"
I loved it that he reflected on those that heard the first Christmas story such as the Shepherds giving their first response.
The author stated that, "sometimes we can hear the Christmas story so much that we become numb to it", or to say it more bluntly the Christmas story no longer has a resonance in our heart
"One …

The Spirit of Christmas

Image
It is so easy to become stressed out at Christmas time; from shopping for gifts and trying to stay within budget, to shopping for the perfect Christmas tree and decorating your house. I am including myself in this "it is easy to become stressed". It has been my sole responsibility to shop for our own children and grandchildren, also to make sure my dad's shopping (gift cards usually) is all complete. I send Christmas cards to family and friends on my own list, plus I send Christmas cards to those people on my dad's list.
It is also easy to become so wrapped up (literally) in all of the pomp and grandeur of the season, that I miss out on the real Spirit of Christmas. That Christmas is not about the tree or the decorations, it is not about Christmas cards or Christmas music, it is not about who has the best decorated home, it is not about baking cookies or a delicious meal, it is not about sleigh rides, or shopping, or beautiful eye appealing wrapped pack…

Bible Reading Challenge 2010

In the past week I've finished reading Proverbs, reading chapters 16-31.

My next update in Bible reading will be in the new year. I plan on continuing on with those books of the Bible that were not read this year:
1 and 2 Chronicles
Job
Psalm
Isaiah (this will be finished in May, as this is the study in BSF that I'm in)
Jeremiah
Ezekiel
Acts (I did read chapters 1-12)
Romans
1 and 2 Corinthians
Galations
Ephesians
Philippians
Colossians
1 and 2 Thessalonians
1 and 2 Timothy

My dad read through the Bible again this year, it was his 50th year! That means it was 1960 when he first started reading through the Bible---that was before me. He finished reading it for this year in October and has already began again. What a testimony for me!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I've been thinking lately how hard it must be for Oprah to Christmas shop. I mean if you were on her "gift list" wouldn't you expect something really, really good? The woman gives away cars and trips to Australia on her television show for goodness sake! It seems by the end of Christmas Day her friends and family would look at the pile of presents and think, "Is that it?" I mean if you knew there was billion…

Feel sad this Christmas? Hey, I know the feeling. In fact, many programs have interviewed me to share about it! Last year, I tried particularly hard to share stories and tips on how to cope with grief during the holidays: I wrote a feature for CBN.com, Coping with Grief at Christmas, visited and counseled grieving people, etc.
Then irony hit: Nea…

The temperature is below zero and dropping quickly—probably to -15 or lower. Old Man Winter gusted in a couple days ago, leaving cold temperatures and a foot of snow behind. Moments ago I bundled up in my long johns and Carhartts to go out and feed. Of course I had a warm horse blanket draped over my arm. When it’s below zero I wrap Czar in two horse blankets.
Czar nickered as soon as he saw me coming. When I buckl…

Reading Challenges for 2011

Image
I plan on not joining in on as many reading challenges as I have the past 2 years. Sometimes too many can be too much, especially when it means I have committed to reading certain books for authors and publisher's and publicist's. I would like more freedom for myself in reading books I have bought or borrowed from the library.
I have decided to join in on the reading challenge for Christian non-fiction that Journey to the End of the TBR Pile started.
Follow the link for more information:
http://bookaddict4life.blogspot.com/2010/12/2011-christian-nonfiction-challenge.html

I was in this challenge for 2010, I cannot remember how many that I signed up for, but so far this year I've read 27 Christian non-fiction books.

This is my list for 2010:
1. Unfaithful, Hope and Healing After Infidelity by Gary and Mona Shriver
2. Angels by David Jeremiah
3. Finding Inner Peace During Troubled Times by William Moss
4. To Him Who Sits On The Throne by Dr. Mike Thomas
5. Spiritual Warfare …

Bible Reading Challenge 2010

This week I finished reading:
Proverbs chapters 1-15, and all of Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter.
All Scripture was read from the NASB except the book of Hebrews that was read from the NIV.

Blissful Reading!

There’s No Place Like…. by Melody Carlson
I grew up spending Christmases at my grandparents’ quaint Victorian home, surrounded by lots of relatives, laughter and love and really good food. For a little girl growing up in a single parent home, harried working mother, no church family, and TV dinners, these extended family holidays spent at my grandparents were like a real gift from God. But as a young adult, my grandfather passed on, the old house was sold, I grew…

The Christmas season is upon us again. Starbucks is selling their Christmas blend; stores are posting their holiday hours; and moms everywhere are making a list and checking it twice, planning for a special Christmas day. It has been our family’s tradition to spend Christmas with relatives.  Last year money was tight and we were unable to travel, this is not how we had planned to spend…
