Jesus spent much time in Bethany, in the home of siblings Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. Later, Jesus miraculously raised Lazarus back from the dead. But from Scripture we know little about the person of Lazarus. We know little about the background or status of this family. Bodie and Brock Thoene have written an amazing fictional account of this family in order to bring to life the beloved friends of Jesus. Other key Biblical characters are also included: John the Baptist, the disciples, Judas Iscariot, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus.

My Thoughts:
My only drawback to this book:
I am a bit leery when author's add fictional accounts to the Bible. I did not feel that the Thoene writing team added false heresy. I didn't agree with some of their assumptions about of the Bible characters. In my opinion it is very important to be careful when writing or reading a historical fiction book on characters from the Bible.
*Reading the Bible should be the primary way we understand and know God's Word.

What I loved about When Jesus Wept:
  • I was given a panoramic picture of what was going on in each scene. I was also given a detailed close-up of the characters.
  • I was given a clearer understanding of how a Jew felt during the Roman occupation of promised land.
  • Dimensional eye-appealing maps are included at the beginning of the book.
  • Jesus' work was always to bring about a deeper understanding from His listener's. He did not want them to think about the temporary, but the eternal.
  • Jesus made the most of every teaching opportunity with people, he never let a moment pass by without guiding and prompting the listener to learn, and more importantly to in Him.
  • The confusion, misunderstanding, fear, traditional viewpoint, adherence to the law, and veil of ignorance, were all displayed vividly through the Jewish people who'd seen and heard Jesus. Later, many of them would look back on their time with Him, and understand.
What stood out to me the most in When Jesus Wept was the portrayal of Jesus' understanding of how people were, because "He knew what was in men's hearts." Yet, Jesus never gave up in pricking their hearts in order for them to come to believe in Him. Jesus also out of full obedience to the Father, and out of His great love for us, died on the cross for our Sin, for my Sin.
